What is God?
By Ashleigh Stewart Ghabi B.Msc

I often enjoy spending quiet time sitting on my balcony just looking at the sky or at the view of the city below. This is where I do most of my contemplating. Last night whilst sitting there I was doing a great deal of thinking about ‘God’. I personally think of ‘God’ as being the great source of energy which created the universe and all of life in existence. I always refer to energy that as ‘The Source’. However, for the sake of this article and so that we understand each other clearly, I will call it ‘God’ because that is the common name that the majority of people use to define the creator.

Whilst sitting there I was thinking all sorts about things about ‘God’, for example, what is God? Who is God? Why is there a God and how did God come to be? God must also have a creator? We are here and God is here, and if we come from God then where did God come from? I became so deeply immersed in my thoughts that my consciousness shifted, as did the energy around me and I became aware of the presence of one of my spirit guides next to me.

My spirit guides are never far and are always happy to oblige when I am in need of some answers or guidance, so in this case I was very happy to have them close by to relieve my questions. I asked once again “What is God please?” All of my guides are very straightforward and direct with their answers. There are no fancy words with them, everything is so simple and to the point and I like it being that way. I find that things are so much easier to comprehend.

This was the answer I received:

“The closest to knowing God that anyone can ever get is if they simply get to know themselves. God is life. God is the source of all life and all creation. To know God is to know yourself and acknowledge that YOU ARE life. All that is required of you is to simply live, get to know your true self and recognize that spark of life that exists in yourself, everyone and everything because that is God. Your life is God, and that makes you a part of God. It is very simple.

No Soul can ever know or fully understand the essence of God whist journeying through its path of evolutionary progression, experiencing life in the dimensional planes of the Universe, regardless of how evolved and enlightened it has become. We were created to learn and experience life and to understand the dynamics of creation in all the dimensional planes of the Universe, each step bringing us closer toward our ultimate goal of being the state of ‘universal perfection’ so our souls can return back to their original source, which is God.

With that we know and accept that we cannot ever really know God until we grow into being that perfection and return to that energy once more. Quite simply, that is God’s the divine plan and design of all of creation, so you will never really know God until you unite with God’s energy once again.”
I was amazed by the simplicity and clarity of this answer! I mean sure, I know that God exists in all of us, as us and I have believed in that for as long as I can remember being aware of God. However, I must admit that though I believed in it, I wasn’t really sure what it meant. It was like some great mystery! I think that we all have the same feelings when it comes to the subject of God. God is just one great big mystery!

We all pray to God, cry to God, ask God for help and guidance. We are afraid of God and are scared stiff waiting for the judgment of God on the day that we die. We allow the fear of God which has been drummed into us from our religions and belief systems to dictate how we live our lives and use that to decide if we will act this way or that way and to asses whether we have sinned or not sinned in our actions each day. But do you not think that deep inside perhaps we all know the truth about God, acknowledging that we are each a spark of God.

In essence God is creation, we are a part of creation and if we want to be closer to God then we just have to begin taking real responsibility for ourselves and the paths we choose to walk in life. Maybe we deny this because we do not want the responsibility of taking charge of our lives. For many it apparently seems easier just to plod on waiting for that judgement day, in the meantime praying to God that we will make it to heaven.

The irony of all of this is that we praise God and thank God for life, food, clothes, air and water. We go to church, the Mosque or whatever your religion refers to as being the house of God. We get on our knees before our God and beg for mercy and forgiveness. We are all in the hands of God and we claim to love him, we worship him, then when things go wrong in our lives, we lose our jobs; we hurt ourselves, we get ill with disease, someone who is close to us dies we don’t understand why. We are not prepared to handle all of his and feel lost and afraid. Since we believe God is responsible for what happens in our lives we become fearful and powerless and then what? We have not accepted the responsibility that is required of us to understand and handle all of which occurs in our daily lives. We have allowed ourselves to be at the mercy of God, waiting for God to do all our work, so what happens next when things go wrong?

There is nothing left to hope for when we believe God has let us down. So we then blame God, we doubt God, we lose our faith in our God, we begin to question all of the beliefs we have been so programmed to believe in ever since we were born and if we lose that one drop of faith and hope in life that we had when we believed in God, our saviour, where do we turn next? There is nowhere to turn after God, he was the last and only hope we had in this pain filled existence.

Please think about the words of my spirit guide when he said you only have to know yourself to know God. You only have to acknowledge your own spark of life and start living to be close to God. You are part of God’s energy and that means you have a responsibility toward yourself. Instead of believing you are separate from God by worshipping an external source of energy all of your life and giving up your own power to fear we have programmed to believe in, a fear that makes us believe God will judge us and condemn us if we do not act this way of that.

Instead of living in fear why not accept the power you have in your own life?  Your power is the power that God gave you when the Universe and your soul was created, that power is your free will.  The law of free will supports the universal purpose of growth and evolution by granting us the right to make choices and decisions which will in turn influence the path our life will take and the experiences, growth and understanding we will attain as a result of those choices. Without free will, there would be no opportunities to grow from our choices. Without growth our Souls would not evolve and without evolution we have no purpose for being here.

When you understand and accept that you have free will, you become the master of your own destiny by taking back your power to react to lives challenges and create life the way you would like it to be. So from now on, instead of praising or blaming an external source of power, choose to praise the God that lives inside of you, that exists as you. This way you will never lose, you will never be afraid and you will feel truly empowered because you are the one guiding your own life, without giving that right to someone else.

You are living for you and that means you will always feel a sense of purpose and whenever something goes wrong in life, you can never be a victim because you are the one who is in charge of how you will react and handle the events, not someone else. If things are not working for you in your life until now, how about taking the initiative to change your attitudes and beliefs and take some responsibility for your own life instead of leaving all the work up to God? From now on try learning to find out about yourself on a deeper level than you imagined and begin to really live. In the end, that is what we are here to do after all.

I would like to leave you with the beautiful Hindu greeting of ‘Namaste’ which can be understood as ‘When the God that exists in me recognises the God that exists in you we become one, ‘Namaste’.
